"Beyond a certain point, the whole universe becomes a continuous process of initiation"
About this Quote
The word “initiation” does heavy countercultural work. Initiations traditionally gatekeep: secret knowledge, new identities, painful ordeals that confer status. Wilson democratises that structure and turns it into a perpetual condition. Once you catch the pattern, every breakdown, coincidence, and rerouted plan becomes another rite. The subtext is pure Wilson: reality is not fixed, authority is suspect, and meaning is something you learn to generate without asking permission.
Context matters. Wilson came out of mid-century American paranoia and possibility - Cold War systems, intelligence-state mystique, psychedelic revelation, the whole 1960s-70s “maybe the map is the prison” mood. His work treats belief as a tool you can pick up and put down, not a shrine you kneel at. So the line isn’t sentimental spirituality; it’s a cognitive strategy. It reframes adulthood as repeated ego-death with better lighting: you don’t graduate from uncertainty. You get initiated into it, again and again, until you realize the curriculum was the point.
