Parenting & Family Quote by Victor Hugo

"Blessed be Providence which has given to each his toy: the doll to the child, the child to the woman, the woman to the man, the man to the devil!"

About this Quote

A neat little chain of custody, delivered like a toast, then twisted into a curse. Hugo’s line turns “Providence” into an accomplice: the universe doesn’t ennoble us with purpose, it distracts us with toys. The wit is in the escalating substitution. A doll is a harmless object; a child is not. By the second step the metaphor has already soured, because what’s being passed along isn’t affection but possession. The sentence keeps its sing-song symmetry while the ethics rot inside it.

The subtext is a savage inventory of 19th-century power. The child as a “toy” for the woman points to domestic confinement: motherhood not as exalted destiny but as the socially permitted outlet for desire, ambition, boredom. Then the woman becomes the man’s “toy,” exposing marriage and gender as a sanctioned economy of control. Hugo isn’t pretending this is natural; he’s staging how “Providence” gets invoked to launder hierarchy into fate.

The final turn is pure Hugo: melodramatic, theological, and surgical. “The man to the devil” doesn’t just punish men; it completes the moral logic of objectification. If you train yourself to treat living beings as playthings, you eventually become one - not to another human, but to the darkest force you can name: appetite, cruelty, history, self-deception. It’s romantic-era rhetoric weaponized against romantic-era complacency, a pious phrasing used to indict the pieties of the day.
