Context matters: Barnes’s work (especially The Sense of an Ending) obsesses over memory’s fraudulence and the stories we tell to domesticate chaos. Here, he’s gesturing at the ethical gap between understanding and inventing. We want reasons because reasons feel like control. But life resists being edited into meaning, and Barnes’s cynicism lands as a challenge: tolerate ambiguity, stop treating causality as entitlement, and admit how much of “because” is just our preferred genre.
