"Business people have been made into these rock stars because they've made a lot of money"
About this Quote
The phrasing does a lot of work. “Have been made into” points to a collective process, not an organic rise. Someone is doing the making: media profiles, glossy magazine covers, dinner-party bragging rights, even political rhetoric that treats executives as saviors. Daly’s “because” is the sharpest blade. Not because they built something beautiful, not because they served a public good, not because they showed moral courage. Because they “made a lot of money.” It’s a deliberately thin justification, and that thinness is the critique.
As an actor, Daly would have watched celebrity being manufactured in real time: publicity machines, curated mystique, audiences trained to applaud whatever the spotlight hits. He’s essentially saying that capitalism learned show business’s tricks, and the audience followed the script. The subtext lands on us: if we’ve turned business into pop spectacle, we’ve also lowered the bar for who counts as admirable. Money becomes a proxy for virtue, intelligence, even leadership. Daly’s line doesn’t moralize loudly; it just exposes the cheap exchange rate between wealth and worship.
