Time & Perspective Quote by Paul Ricoeur

"But myth is something else than an explanation of the world, of history, and of destiny"

About this Quote

Ricoeur is warning you off the lazy way modern people talk about myth: as a primitive Wikipedia entry for how the world works. “Explanation” is the language of causes, proofs, and closure; it’s what science and certain styles of history promise. By insisting myth is “something else,” he doesn’t just correct a category error, he protects myth’s real power: it doesn’t settle questions, it stages them.

The triad “world, history, and destiny” is doing heavy lifting. It maps the three arenas where humans crave a master key: nature (why things are), time (why things happened), and fate (what it all is for). Ricoeur’s subtext is that myth refuses to be that key. Myth is not an early draft of physics or a clumsy attempt at historiography; it’s a symbolic machine that makes experience inhabitable. It organizes fear, guilt, hope, violence, and longing into narrative forms we can live inside, then interrogate.

Context matters: Ricoeur, writing in the shadow of twentieth-century ideological catastrophe, is allergic to totalizing “explanations” that claim destiny on behalf of a nation, a class, or a race. Myths can be mobilized for that, but their native register is not deterministic. In Ricoeur’s hermeneutic project, myth belongs to interpretation: it “gives rise to thought” rather than replacing it. That’s why the sentence is phrased as a boundary. It’s a polemic against both scientistic condescension (myth as bad science) and political absolutism (myth as fate). Myth is meaning under pressure, not a lecture.
