"But the question is a matter of the survival and the teaching. That's what our work comes down to. No matter where we key into it, it's the same work, just different pieces of ourselves doing it"
About this Quote
The subtext is collective. “The question” isn’t framed as an abstract debate but as a practical crisis with consequences. Lorde’s work sits in the aftermath of civil rights victories that didn’t dissolve structural racism, inside feminist movements that often treated Black women as footnotes, and amid queer and anti-imperialist politics that demanded new language. Her insistence that “it’s the same work” pushes back against activist specialization and siloed identities. The fight doesn’t change because you’ve shifted rooms; the stakes don’t drop because you’ve changed audiences.
The most revealing phrase is “where we key into it.” Like a key finding its lock, each person enters the struggle from a different access point: poetry, organizing, mothering, scholarship, friendship, desire. “Different pieces of ourselves” acknowledges fracture without surrendering to it. Lorde is arguing for integrity as a method: the self isn’t a distraction from politics, it’s the instrument through which politics gets made legible, and livable.
