Daily Inspiration Quote by Gene Siskel

"But you know, really, if you think about it, Roger and I and all critics really have one absolute essential part of our credentials, and that is that you believe that that is actually what we think"

About this Quote

Trust is the only special effect a critic can’t fake. Gene Siskel’s line lands because it refuses the glamour people often project onto criticism: expertise, authority, insider status. He reduces the whole enterprise to something almost embarrassingly basic - that the audience believes the critic is saying what he actually thinks. Not “right,” not “objective,” not even “smart.” Credible.

The repetition and conversational clutter (“you know, really,” “if you think about it,” “that is that”) reads like a man talking through a principle he considers obvious but increasingly endangered. Coming from Siskel - half of the Siskel-and-Ebert double act that turned movie reviewing into appointment TV - it’s also a subtle defense of performance. Their on-air chemistry could look like theater, and their influence could invite suspicion: studio pressure, celebrity access, the gravitational pull of consensus. Siskel counters with a plainspoken credential that can’t be credentialed by institutions: perceived sincerity.

The subtext is sharper than the modest phrasing suggests. If belief in honesty is the “absolute essential,” then everything else critics trade in - rankings, rhetoric, even knowledge - is secondary. It’s a warning shot at critics who write like brands, hedge like politicians, or treat takes as content. And it’s a reminder to audiences: you don’t have to agree with a critic to value them. You just have to sense they’re not auditioning for your approval.
