"By concentrating on precision, one arrives at technique, but by concentrating on technique, one does not arrive at precision"
About this Quote
Precision here isn’t mere accuracy. It’s interpretive specificity: the exact weight of an accent, the length of a silence, the emotional temperature of a phrase. If you obsess over that level of detail, you’re forced to invent the means to achieve it. Technique becomes a toolkit assembled under pressure, not a trophy collected in advance. Reverse the order and you get a performer with impressive machinery and vague aim: the musical equivalent of high-resolution footage with no focus.
The subtext is also psychological. “Concentrating on technique” is comforting because it’s legible, coachable, and socially rewarded. “Concentrating on precision” is riskier because it implies you have something precise to say - an artistic point of view that can fail in public. Walter, a conductor steeped in the Austro-German tradition and active through a century of upheaval, knew interpretation isn’t a neutral act. You can’t technique your way into meaning.
As advice, it’s less anti-technique than anti-avoidance: stop polishing the steering wheel and pick a destination. Technique will follow the demand for exact expression. Without that demand, it’s just sheen.
