Daily Inspiration Quote by Charles Spurgeon

"By perseverance the snail reached the ark"

About this Quote

Spurgeon’s genius here is that he makes perseverance feel both holy and faintly comic. A snail on the way to Noah’s ark is an absurd image: slow, vulnerable, almost laughably outmatched by the scale of the task and the deadline implied by an oncoming flood. That’s the point. By choosing the least heroic traveler imaginable, Spurgeon strips spiritual progress of its usual Victorian bravado. He’s not praising grit as a personality brand; he’s insisting that steady, plodding faith counts, even when it looks ridiculous next to more glamorous forms of devotion.

The intent is pastoral, not poetic for its own sake. Spurgeon preached to ordinary people in industrial London, many of them exhausted by work, poverty, and the moral pressure of a culture that loved respectability. This line meets them where they are: you don’t need to be a stallion of sanctity. You need to keep moving. It’s motivational, but with a preacher’s edge: the ark is not a vague metaphor for “success,” it’s salvation under threat. The clock is real.

Subtextually, the quote also functions as a rebuke to spiritual elitism and impatience. If the snail can arrive, then the person who quits because they’re not instantly transformed has no excuse. Spurgeon sneaks in comfort and accountability at once: God’s destination is reachable, but you can’t outsource the journey. The humor disarms; the urgency remains.
