"Can anybody be given a great degree of creativity? No. They can be given the equipment to develop it-if they have it in them in the first place"
About this Quote
The subtext is partly defensive, partly generous. Defensive because Shearing is protecting the hard-won legitimacy of artistry: if creativity were endlessly transferable, then the musician’s edge is just access and privilege. Generous because he still believes in education and infrastructure. “Equipment” is a quietly expansive word; it suggests not only gear but also literacy, ear training, repertoire, discipline, and the social ecosystem that lets musicians develop. He’s acknowledging opportunity matters, while refusing the modern fantasy that opportunity automatically produces originality.
Context sharpens it. Shearing, a blind British jazz pianist who became internationally prominent, lived in a world where “creativity” often gets romanticized as spontaneous inspiration. Jazz especially is mythologized as pure freedom. His sentence drags that myth back to the bandstand: improvisation is built on vocabulary, listening, and taste - things you can cultivate only if there’s already a receptive mind behind them.
It’s also a subtle critique of institutions: schools can supply resources, but they can’t manufacture the spark. The best they can do is stop smothering it.
