Bakshi is picking a fight with the polite hierarchy that treats cartoons as disposable and “fine art” as something that hangs still and silent on a wall. The line is a declaration of status, but it’s also a strategic reframing: he’s not asking animation to be taken seriously because it’s expensive or technically impressive. He’s arguing it deserves respect because it’s cartooning, and cartooning at its peak is already an art form with its own rigor and authorship.

The sly move is in “allows me to paint my cartoons.” Bakshi isn’t talking about paint as a material; he’s talking about permission. Animation gives him a way to smuggle painterly ambition into a medium that people assume is lightweight or commercial. In his era, American animation was largely dominated by family-friendly studio aesthetics, with “adult” animation treated as either an off-color novelty or a contradiction. Bakshi’s films - from Fritz the Cat to Heavy Traffic to Wizards - were built on breaking that expectation, using rough linework, urban grime, sex, politics, and collage-like techniques (including mixed media) to insist that the drawn image can carry the same psychological and cultural weight as live action.

There’s subtexted defensiveness here, too: a cartoonist still has to justify himself to gatekeepers who think seriousness arrives only when you approximate live-action realism. Bakshi flips that script. His point isn’t that animation can imitate cinema; it’s that cinema can be reimagined through the primal, elastic language of cartoons.
