A provocation disguised as a syllogism: Novak is yanking Christianity back toward its inconvenient root system. “Christians must be Jews” isn’t a call for conversion in the ethnic or ritual sense; it’s an argument about dependence. The faith that claims to fulfill a promise can’t survive if the promise was never real. His second sentence makes the wager explicit: Christian truth is not self-grounding, it’s parasitic on (or, more charitably, grafted into) the “first covenant.”

The intent is partly theological triage. After centuries of Christian supersessionism - the idea that the Church replaces Israel - Novak flips the direction of obligation. The burden is on Christians to treat Judaism not as a historical preface, but as a living warranty. That move carries moral freight in the post-Holocaust era: if Christian anti-Judaism helped create a cultural weather system where genocide became thinkable, then reaffirming Judaism’s ongoing covenant is a corrective, not a courtesy.

The subtext is also political. Novak, a public intellectual of late-20th-century American conservatism, is defending a Judeo-Christian moral genealogy against both secular amnesia and intra-Christian shortcuts. By anchoring Christianity in Judaism, he narrows the space for Christianity-as-brand: a free-floating identity detached from Hebrew scripture, Jewish peoplehood, and the uncomfortable particularity of biblical history.

Rhetorically, the line works because it refuses a soft ecumenical gesture. It’s relational and conditional: Christianity’s claim stands or falls with Judaism’s. That’s less interfaith niceness than existential dependence.
