"Color can do anything that black-and-white can"
About this Quote
The intent is defensive and ambitious at once. Minnelli made some of the most ravishing color films in American cinema, and he knew how easily “ravishing” gets dismissed as shallow. His claim is a refusal to let color be pigeonholed as decoration. It’s also a sly challenge: if black-and-white is associated with realism and psychological depth, then color must prove it can carry ambiguity, dread, restraint, and moral complexity without leaning on the crutch of grayscale gravitas.
Subtext: color is language, not wallpaper. Minnelli’s best work uses palettes the way other directors use lighting ratios, turning emotion into atmosphere and staging into psychology. He’s pushing back on the idea that meaning requires deprivation, that seriousness is synonymous with limitation. The statement reads as an argument for modernity, too: audiences and critics were being trained to trust monochrome and mistrust chroma, as if the world itself weren’t in color.
Context matters: coming out of Technicolor’s maturation and into an era when television made black-and-white commonplace, Minnelli is staking out color cinema as fully adult - capable of intimacy, not just novelty.
