Creativity Quote by Ruggiero Ricci

"Colour does not make so much difference. Look at the Bach Chaconne: There is not one dynamic mark in the whole Bach Chaconne. Colours do not make so much difference"

About this Quote

Ricci is poking a thumb in the eye of a very modern obsession: the belief that interpretation is basically a paintbox. In violin culture, "color" has become a kind of moral currency. A player who can spin ten shades of sul tasto melancholy or velvet-sheen vibrato is treated as deeper, truer, more "artistic". Ricci, a hard-edged virtuoso from the era when technique and line were non-negotiable, calls that bluff by invoking the Bach Chaconne, the sacred test piece where everyone wants to baptize their personal philosophy.

His point is deliberately blunt: Bach gives you almost nothing in the way of explicit performance instructions, and the music still crushes you. No dynamic marks, no emotional stage directions, no invitation to dramatize the bar lines. That absence is the argument. It forces the performer to generate architecture rather than atmosphere: pulse, harmony, voice-leading, the long arc of tension and release. "Colour" becomes seasoning, not the meal.

The subtext is also a warning against confusing taste with substance. When Ricci repeats himself, it reads like impatience with a pedagogical industry that sells interpretation as effects. The Chaconne is engineered to survive bad lighting: even played plainly, it reveals its structural genius. Ricci isn't advocating monochrome playing; he's insisting that the real drama is already in the notes, and the performer’s job is to expose it, not repaint it.
