Parenting & Family Quote by Søren Kierkegaard

"Concepts, like individuals, have their histories and are just as incapable of withstanding the ravages of time as are individuals. But in and through all this they retain a kind of homesickness for the scenes of their childhood"

About this Quote

Kierkegaard treats ideas less like clean, detachable tools and more like living creatures with biographies. That’s the provocation: concepts don’t arrive as timeless truths; they’re born inside particular arguments, anxieties, and social needs, then get dragged through history the way a person gets dragged through adulthood. Time doesn’t merely “refine” them. It deforms them, sands off their edges, loads them with misunderstandings, and sometimes turns them into polite museum pieces - still named, no longer felt.

The sly force of the line is the emotional metaphor: “homesickness.” Kierkegaard is warning that even our most abstract vocabulary carries a longing for origin - the early, intimate scene where the concept first had urgency. Think of “faith” before it becomes a cultural label, or “authenticity” before it turns into branding. A mature concept, like a mature person, can function in public, but it remembers (and misses) the conditions that made it necessary. That nostalgia is not sentimental; it’s diagnostic. When a concept is deployed far from its birthplace, it risks becoming hollow, and the longing signals that something vital has been lost.

Context matters. Writing in 19th-century Denmark, Kierkegaard is battling the era’s confidence in systems - especially Hegelian philosophy and comfortable state Christianity - that claim to deliver universal, historical inevitabilities. “Homesickness” is his way of smuggling subjectivity back into the discussion: truth has a lived texture, and ideas that forget their childhood forget the stakes that once made them true for someone.
