Calling it a "liberating idea" quietly demotes the object - the painting, the sculpture, the precious thing-for-the-wall - and promotes the plan. In LeWitt's world, the artwork is the instruction set, the proposition, the system you can execute (or refuse). That shift explains the boldness of his claim: liberation from the tyranny of craft, scarcity, and the market's obsession with signatures.

The phrasing is strategic. "Became" suggests inevitability, as if conceptual art emerged because the old contract between artist and audience had worn out. "Real impetus" implies that the prior engines of modernism - virtuoso form, heroic expression, the cult of genius - were running on fumes. LeWitt is staking out an origin story: the last four decades of art history make sense if you treat ideas as the primary medium.

Context matters: late-1960s America, when Minimalism had already stripped art down to industrial plainness and artists were questioning institutions, authorship, and power. Conceptual art offered a way to keep making work without making commodities, or at least without pretending the commodity was the point. The subtext is both utopian and pragmatic: if the idea is the artwork, it can travel, be remade, be shared, evade ownership - and still remain "authentic" because authenticity lives in the concept.
