Life & Wisdom Quote by Walter Bagehot

"Conquest is the missionary of valor, and the hard impact of military virtues beats meanness out of the world"

About this Quote

Bagehot dresses imperial aggression in the respectable clothes of moral hygiene. “Conquest” isn’t framed as theft or domination but as a “missionary” - a word that smuggles in Victorian benevolence, spiritual duty, and the idea that violence can be a kind of public service. The phrase “missionary of valor” turns war into pedagogy: courage is taught not by example or civic virtue but by subjugation, as if nations mature only when they’re bruised.

The engine of the line is its blunt, almost industrial imagery: “hard impact,” “beats…out of the world.” It’s not persuasion; it’s pummeling. That physicality is the argument. Military “virtues” are treated like a corrective force that can hammer “meanness” (pettiness, cowardice, moral smallness) into extinction. The subtext is social Darwinism with a gentleman’s accent: the world improves through struggle, and those who can’t withstand the impact are, implicitly, the world’s refuse.

Context matters. Bagehot wrote in a Britain at peak confidence in empire, when liberal institutions at home coexisted with coercion abroad. His broader work often tries to explain how states develop and stabilize; here, development is imagined as something war administers when softer mechanisms fail. The intent isn’t just to praise courage but to legitimize conquest as civilizational therapy.

What makes the sentence “work” is how it converts a contested political act into an apparently objective moral process. If conquest is a missionary, opposition looks like sin; if violence “beats meanness out,” the victims can be recast as beneficiaries. That rhetorical move is the real conquest.
