Education Quote by David Ben-Gurion

"Courage is a special kind of knowledge: the knowledge of how to fear what ought to be feared and how not to fear what ought not to be feared"

About this Quote

Ben-Gurion strips courage of its Hollywood costume and hands it back as a form of disciplined perception. Not bravado, not adrenaline, not the macho refusal to feel fear at all, but a kind of intelligence: the ability to rank threats correctly. The line has the dry authority of someone who has watched panic become policy and wishful thinking masquerade as optimism.

The phrasing matters. “Special kind of knowledge” relocates courage from the heart to the head. It suggests training, judgment, and a willingness to revise your instincts. Fear, in this view, isn’t a moral failure; it’s data. The failure is misreading it - inflating inconveniences into existential crises, or shrinking real dangers into manageable talking points. That distinction is the whole game in politics: leaders are constantly performing a public calibration of risk, and entire societies take their cues from that performance.

The subtext is a warning against two temptations that can destroy a state: paranoia and denial. Ben-Gurion, as a founder of Israel navigating war, diplomacy, and internal fracture, understood that both are seductive. Paranoia creates endless emergency, justifying cruelty and shortsightedness. Denial buys temporary comfort while letting enemies, crises, or structural problems mature unchecked.

By framing courage as knowing what deserves fear - and what doesn’t - he also implies accountability. If you can learn it, you can be judged on it. Courage becomes less a personality trait than a civic skill: the capacity to keep your nerve without lying to yourself about what’s actually at stake.
