Love Quote by Jean Baudrillard

"Cowardice and courage are never without a measure of affectation. Nor is love. Feelings are never true. They play with their mirrors"

About this Quote

Baudrillard hands you an insult disguised as an aphorism: you think you feel, but you mostly perform. “Cowardice and courage” land first because they’re the emotions we treat like moral bedrock. He punctures that comfort by calling them “never without a measure of affectation,” a word that doesn’t just mean fakery; it means styling, staging, choosing a pose. Even bravery, in his frame, is inseparable from the way it wants to be seen and narrated. The hero and the coward are both, in part, actors auditioning for an audience, even if that audience is only the self.

Then he tightens the screw: “Nor is love.” The move is classic Baudrillard: take the one category we defend as sacred authenticity and drag it into the same economy of display. Love becomes less a private essence than a script assembled from cultural images, romantic genres, and the craving for recognition. It’s not that people don’t suffer or rejoice; it’s that the suffering and rejoicing arrive already mediated.

“Feelings are never true” sounds nihilistic until the last line reveals the mechanism: “They play with their mirrors.” In a media-saturated society, emotions bounce between reflections - how we think we should feel, how others perform feeling, how film and advertising pre-feel it for us. The “mirror” is also self-surveillance: we watch ourselves having an emotion and adjust it mid-stream. Baudrillard’s intent isn’t to deny experience but to expose its feedback loop, where sincerity becomes just another special effect.
