"Despite what people think of cowboys, they take pride in how they look, and that look is important to them"
About this Quote
“Take pride” is the tell. It reframes appearance as craft rather than costume. A cowboy’s hat crease, polished boots, pressed shirt, clean denim - these aren’t frivolous details; they’re signals inside a community where you’re read quickly and constantly. The “look” becomes a kind of social grammar: competence, respectability, even self-protection. If you’re going to be judged anyway, you might as well control the terms.
Coming from an actor, the remark also doubles back on Kanaly’s own industry. Actors live inside wardrobes and lighting schemes that manufacture “realness,” and Westerns are especially guilty of selling a fantasy of effortless masculinity. Kanaly’s subtext is that the “effortless” part is the lie. Cowboys, like actors, perform identity - not because they’re fake, but because identity is something you maintain.
There’s a subtle cultural counterpunch here, too. Caring about how you look is often coded as unmanly or superficial; Kanaly argues it’s neither. Pride in appearance isn’t vanity in this world - it’s dignity, tradition, and belonging, stitched into leather and denim.
