Life & Wisdom Quote by Charles Bukowski

"Drinking is another way of thinking, another way of living. It gives you two lives instead of one"

About this Quote

Bukowski turns alcohol from a vice into a metaphysics project, then dares you to call him on it. “Another way of thinking, another way of living” isn’t just romanticizing the bottle; it’s a claim about consciousness as something you can hack. Drinking becomes a DIY switch in the circuitry of the self, a shortcut to a parallel mindset when ordinary life feels like a long sentence with no commas.

The line works because it’s both seduction and self-indictment. “It gives you two lives instead of one” sounds like a bargain, but the subtext is that the first life is intolerable - or at least insufficiently vivid. Bukowski’s genius is his blunt, almost bureaucratic phrasing: not “transcendence”, not “ecstasy”, just “another way”. That plainness is the con. He frames escape as a reasonable lifestyle choice, an alternate operating system, as if addiction were merely versatility.

Context matters: Bukowski’s persona was built in the postwar American grind - cheap rooms, bad jobs, racetrack light, a culture selling respectability while punishing people who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) perform it. Alcohol, in that world, is anesthesia, rebellion, and class marker all at once: the poor man’s luxury and the writer’s alibi. The “two lives” promise carries a quiet threat: you’ll start needing the second life to tolerate the first, and eventually the first shrinks to a hangover between sessions. Bukowski doesn’t moralize; he commercializes oblivion, then lets the invoice arrive on its own.
