If the church keeps repeating inherited phrasing as if it were sacred in itself, it won’t be “faithful”; it will be unintelligible, which for Schaeffer is a kind of unfaithfulness.

The phrase “each generation” spreads responsibility horizontally, denying any golden age of perfect articulation. No era gets to outsource the work to the Reformers, the early church, or the latest celebrity apologist. And “in each setting” pushes against the fantasy of a single Christian dialect. Schaeffer had watched Western culture’s plausibility structures shift: postwar confidence curdling into suspicion, “reason” losing its authority, art and youth movements becoming sites of moral imagination. “Language and thought-forms” is the loaded part. He’s not just talking about slang, but the deep assumptions people bring to words like truth, freedom, guilt, self, and meaning. There’s also a boundary implied. Schaeffer doesn’t grant permission to edit the gospel into something more palatable; he insists on translation, not mutation.
