"Estrangement shows itself precisely in the elimination of distance between people"
About this Quote
The intent is classic Frankfurt School suspicion: what passes as human warmth under late capitalism often functions as social management. When everyone is brought too near - through standardized language, office conviviality, consumer culture, mass media - difference is flattened into the familiar. You don’t meet the other as other; you meet a pre-packaged version, safe for exchange. Estrangement, then, is not the absence of contact but contact stripped of friction, where people circulate like interchangeable units.
Subtext: coercion can wear the mask of friendliness. The elimination of distance can mean surveillance, the demand to perform accessibility, the conversion of interior life into something shareable. It anticipates our present tense: hyperconnectivity that produces loneliness; “community” built from metrics; intimacy mediated by platforms whose business model is reducing every gap into a monetizable interface.
Context matters. Writing in the shadow of fascism and the culture industry, Adorno distrusted the mass production of sameness and the way social life can mobilize proximity for conformity. His paradox argues that a humane society might require more distance, not less: a buffer where autonomy survives, and where encounter isn’t immediately turned into consumption or control.
