The line also works as a sly manifesto for Fellini’s particular kind of cinema, where autobiography doesn’t arrive as confession but as atmosphere. His pivot toward the baroque, the dreamlike, the self-referential was often criticized as indulgent. This quip preempts the critique by embracing it, but with a director’s shrug: of course it’s about me - that’s the medium’s honest condition, not a personal failing.

It’s also a warning disguised as charm. If every film is a self-portrait, then “authenticity” isn’t purity; it’s accountability for the self you’re smuggling into the frame.
