Life & Wisdom Quote by Robert Louis Stevenson

"Even if the doctor does not give you a year, even if he hesitates about a month, make one brave push and see what can be accomplished in a week"

About this Quote

Stevenson turns the calendar into a dare. The line has the snap of someone who knows prognosis isn’t just information; it’s a story other people try to write on your behalf. “Even if the doctor does not give you a year” sets up medicine as authority and time as a rationed commodity, then undercuts that authority with an insistence on agency: the unit that matters isn’t the year or the month, but the week you can still bend to your will.

The intent is tactical hope, not sentimental optimism. Stevenson doesn’t promise recovery; he proposes a wager. “Make one brave push” is muscular language for a writer, and that’s the point: creativity, love, work, reconciliation - whatever your life’s unfinished business is - requires exertion, not mood. The subtext is that waiting for “enough time” is a luxury the sick don’t have, and maybe the healthy misuse. By shrinking the horizon, he makes courage measurable. A week is concrete: seven mornings, seven chances to show up, apologize, write the page, take the walk, finish the sentence.

Context sharpens the edge. Stevenson lived much of his adult life in frail health, dogged by tuberculosis, often treated as a fragile invalid even as he produced adventure stories that fetishize motion and risk. That tension pulses here: the body may be failing, but the self can still choose intensity over resignation. It’s an argument against passive dying - and, slyly, against passive living.
