The subtext is transactional and suspicious. “Purchased” makes peace sound like a commodity offered by someone with leverage, and “too high a price” forces the reader to ask what’s being sold off to secure it: rights, representation, the ability to dissent, the moral spine that keeps a society from shrinking into obedient comfort.
