He’s warning that spiritual language becomes dangerous when it’s treated as a sealed container. “Universal assent” adds a political edge. Gandhi isn’t imagining truth as whatever a priestly class declares; he’s gesturing toward a shared moral commons, something that can survive translation across communities. That’s strategically anti-sectarian in a plural society and tactically anti-imperial against a colonial regime that claimed “reason” as its own civilizing brand. He’s insisting that neither tradition nor empire gets to monopolize legitimacy: if a belief can’t answer to conscience and common humanity, it forfeits the right to rule.
