Aging & Wisdom Quote by Mahatma Gandhi

"Every formula of every religion has in this age of reason, to submit to the acid test of reason and universal assent"

About this Quote

Gandhi’s line lands with the force of a moral dare: faith, if it wants authority in the modern world, can’t demand exemptions. By calling the era an “age of reason,” he borrows the prestige of Enlightenment rationality without surrendering to a cold secularism. The phrase “acid test” is doing the real work. It suggests corrosion, chemistry, and proof under pressure: beliefs aren’t merely to be admired or inherited; they’re to be exposed to conditions that reveal whether they’re durable or counterfeit.

The sharpest move is his target: not religion itself but its “formula.” Gandhi is isolating doctrine, ritual, and dogma-the parts most likely to calcify into social control-from the lived ethical core he often defended. He’s warning that spiritual language becomes dangerous when it’s treated as a sealed container. In an India knotted by caste hierarchy, communal tension, and colonial power, “religious formulas” could sanctify inequality as easily as they could inspire sacrifice. Reason is his solvent.

“Universal assent” adds a political edge. Gandhi isn’t imagining truth as whatever a priestly class declares; he’s gesturing toward a shared moral commons, something that can survive translation across communities. That’s strategically anti-sectarian in a plural society and tactically anti-imperial against a colonial regime that claimed “reason” as its own civilizing brand. He’s insisting that neither tradition nor empire gets to monopolize legitimacy: if a belief can’t answer to conscience and common humanity, it forfeits the right to rule.
