That choice of imagery quietly shifts responsibility onto both the individual and the society that shapes him: potential is real, but it’s also unfinished, obstructed, and vulnerable to being ruined.

Invoking Praxiteles and Apollo is doing tactical work. Marti borrows the authority of Western “high” beauty to argue for human dignity across class, race, and colonial status. In a late-19th-century world that naturalized hierarchy, he insists greatness isn’t the property of empires or elites; it’s embedded, “within” the human material itself. The subtext is anti-colonial pedagogy: if the colonized subject is treated as crude stone, Marti counters that the so-called roughness is not inferiority but uncarved possibility.

As an activist writing in the orbit of Cuban independence, Marti is also warning against fatalism. “Contains in a rough state” acknowledges hardship without sanctifying it. He’s telling readers: don’t confuse present condition with destiny, and don’t outsource your becoming to rulers, priests, or imported models of “civilization.” The ideal isn’t a foreign statue shipped in; it’s already in the block.
