"Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness"
About this Quote
The subtext is moral, but not pious. Ruskin isn’t scolding pleasure; he’s diagnosing a cultural delusion. Mid-19th-century Britain was swelling with industrial wealth, consumer goods, and a new middle-class domestic ideal that treated the home as a showroom of virtue. Ruskin, a fierce critic of industrial capitalism and shoddy mass production, saw how “progress” could hollow out attention and ethics. What looks like security can become surveillance: you start living for the thing, managing it, insuring it, dusting it, worrying it will be taken, comparing it to someone else’s newer version.
The sentence works because it refuses melodrama. “Weariness” is understated, almost polite, which makes it more plausible - and more damning. He’s describing the ambient exhaustion that modern consumer culture still manufactures: the paradox where upgrades promise freedom but deliver admin. Ruskin’s real target is not the object, but the way possession reorganizes the self around keeping, rather than being.
