"Every writer hopes or boldly assumes that his life is in some sense exemplary, that the particular will turn out to be universal"
About this Quote
Amis is also poking at the polite myth of literary humility. We like to imagine the novelist as an observer, a technician of character and plot. He’s reminding us that the engine is ego, even when it’s dressed up as empathy. "Exemplary" is a loaded word: it implies moral instruction, a model to learn from, not merely an interesting case. That’s an uncomfortable claim in a culture suspicious of grand narratives, and in a British tradition where self-importance is typically punished with ridicule. Amis manages to both acknowledge and weaponize that ridicule.
The subtext is how autobiography haunts even supposedly "made-up" fiction. To write is to insist the particular deserves translation, that your time, your class, your appetites, your humiliations can be metabolized into something legible to strangers. In the postwar-to-postmodern lane Amis helped define, that insistence is always half-confident, half-defensive: universalism is the prize, but also the alibi.
