Creativity Quote by Rudolf Bing

"Expressions of disapproval are on a level of vulgarity that cannot be tolerated. The way to express disapproval is to do without applause"

About this Quote

Bing’s line is less about manners than power: a velvet-glove doctrine for keeping the concert hall a controlled environment, where the performance remains sacred and the audience remains, above all, manageable. Calling open disapproval “vulgarity” isn’t a neutral aesthetic stance; it’s a social sorting mechanism. Vulgar, here, means noisy, disruptive, lower-status, the kind of spontaneity that threatens the whole illusion of cultured consensus. In Bing’s world, the public can adore, but it shouldn’t judge out loud.

The brilliance of the formulation is its sleight of hand. He doesn’t forbid dissent; he redesigns it. “Do without applause” sounds like a gentle alternative, but it’s also a way to make protest invisible. Silence is legible only to those already fluent in the codes of elite spaces; everyone else just looks bored. That’s the subtext: if you must object, do it in a way that won’t interrupt the institution’s rhythm, won’t embarrass the performers, won’t infect the room with conflict.

Context matters. Bing, who ran the Metropolitan Opera through midcentury upheavals, was tasked with selling opera as high art in a mass-media age. Boos and catcalls pull opera down into the rowdy marketplace of opinion; withholding applause keeps it up in the realm of curated reverence. It’s audience behavior as brand management: protect the product, preserve the prestige, and let dissent register only as a polite absence rather than a public reckoning.
