"Feminine traits are called weaknesses. People joke about them; fools ridicule them; but reasonable persons see very well that those traits are just the tools for the management of men, and for the use of men for female designs"
About this Quote
The subtext is defensive. Kant recognizes, perhaps more candidly than many of his peers, that the gender order is unstable: ridicule exists because those traits actually work. So he reframes the threat as nature’s plan. If women can “manage” men, it’s not because they’re equals, but because they’ve been assigned a different technology of power - charm, softness, emotional acuity - that keeps male authority intact while explaining away male susceptibility. It’s a tidy way to preserve patriarchal innocence: men remain the official subjects of reason even when they’re being steered.
Context matters. This comes out of an 18th-century European culture that treated “sensibility” as feminine and “reason” as masculine, and out of Kant’s broader tendency to tether moral worth to rational autonomy. The line reads less like feminist insight than like an admission that exclusion breeds strategy: when you bar a group from formal power, you shouldn’t be surprised when it develops informal leverage - and then gets blamed for using it.
