"First and foremost, it was fun. Everybody involved with it made you feel like they were an important contributor to the process. We were made to feel valued"
About this Quote
The second sentence does the real work. “Everybody involved” expands the spotlight beyond above-the-line talent; it’s a nod to crews, assistants, the people who usually absorb stress without getting credit. Arkin’s phrasing is careful: “made you feel like” admits the emotional texture of collaboration matters as much as the formal hierarchy. In a business where power is often exercised through exclusion - who’s in the room, who gets the note, who gets thanked - feeling “like they were an important contributor” is a corrective.
Then the clincher: “We were made to feel valued.” Passive voice, but purposeful. He’s not claiming everyone magically valued each other; he’s pointing to leadership and design. Someone set the tone. The subtext is a subtle rebuke to sets where respect is rationed and morale is treated as optional. Arkin is selling a model of creative work where validation is infrastructural, not accidental - and where “fun” is evidence that the machine is being run by humans, not just ego.
