Faith & Spirit Quote by Saint Teresa

"For prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God"

About this Quote

Prayer gets demoted here from performance to relationship, and that demotion is the whole revolution. Saint Teresa’s line sidesteps the transactional bargain most people slip into when they pray: I’ll say the words, you deliver the outcome. “Nothing else” is a hard clamp on spiritual consumerism. She’s not selling prayer as a technique for getting God’s attention; she’s redefining it as the steady, ordinary work of intimacy.

“On terms of friendship” is doing the heavy lifting. Friendship implies time, mutuality, candor, even awkward silence. It also implies a certain equality of address, not equality of status. Teresa doesn’t flatten the distance between human and divine; she changes the posture. You don’t approach a friend with courtly scripts, you show up as you are. That’s subtext aimed at a 16th-century Catholic world thick with hierarchy, formula, and suspicion of interior, unsupervised spirituality. In the heat of the Counter-Reformation, when the Church was tightening discipline and scrutinizing mystics, Teresa argues for an interior life that can’t be policed by mere rhetoric. Friendship is harder to fake than piety.

The intent is practical, almost managerial: normalize prayer for people who feel unqualified. If prayer is friendship, you don’t need eloquence, only presence. It also contains a bracing moral corollary: friends can’t be kept at arm’s length. This isn’t a devotional sugarcoat; it’s a demand for consistency. If God is treated as friend, then the rest of life has to stop treating God as a vending machine.
