Life & Wisdom Quote by Doris Lessing

"For the last third of life there remains only work. It alone is always stimulating, rejuvenating, exciting and satisfying"

About this Quote

Lessing’s line is bracing because it refuses the comforting script we sell about aging: that later life is for rest, wisdom-as-leisure, or a gentle winding down. She turns “the last third” into a hard deadline, then offers a single, almost austere consolation prize: work. Not work as hustle-culture virtue signaling, but work as the one reliably renewable source of friction with the world - the thing that still pushes back, still demands attention, still proves you’re alive.

The certainty is the point. “Only work” sounds bleak until she piles on the counterintuitive adjectives: “stimulating, rejuvenating, exciting and satisfying.” That list is doing rhetorical labor; it’s a rebuttal to the idea that work is merely obligation. Lessing, a writer forged in political disillusionment and personal independence, is staking a claim for creative labor as a kind of private sovereignty. When institutions fail, relationships fracture, and the body starts issuing ultimatums, the page (or the project) remains a site where agency can be practiced daily.

There’s subtext, too: the shrinking of options isn’t just biological, it’s social. Older people, especially older women, are often gently nudged toward invisibility. Lessing’s solution is not to plead for relevance but to manufacture it through making. The line reads like self-prescription as much as philosophy: a disciplined, slightly defiant way to stay in the room by building the room yourself.
