Wit & Attitude Quote by David Bailey

"Fortunately I didn't get educated because if I'd got educated I'd be an educated fool now"

About this Quote

Bailey turns anti-credentialism into a boast, but not a simple one. The line lands because it comes from a photographer who emerged out of working-class London and helped define the visual electricity of the 1960s without moving through the usual cultural gatekeeping. "Fortunately" is the blade in the sentence: he treats the absence of formal education not as deprivation, but as rescue. Rescue from what? From becoming an "educated fool" - someone polished, approved, and uselessly trapped inside inherited ideas.

There is swagger here, but also class resentment sharpened into insight. British culture has long confused education with authority, especially in the arts, where taste can function like a border checkpoint. Bailey's quip rejects that entire arrangement. He is not attacking intelligence; he is attacking the kind of education that domesticates instinct, that teaches people to speak fluently about life while standing at a safe distance from it. For a photographer, that distinction matters. His medium rewards speed, appetite, nerve, the ability to recognize a live moment before it goes dead. Too much deference can flatten vision.

The quote also fits the mythology Bailey helped build around himself: irreverent, streetwise, allergic to poshness. It is partly self-defense, partly cultural critique, partly performance. He knows the line is funny because it inverts a standard shame narrative. Not being educated should mark him as lacking; instead he recasts the educated as the ones in danger of fraudulence. That's why it sticks. It's not ignorance talking. It's a veteran of the image wars insisting that institutions often mistake refinement for perception.
