Politics & Power Quote by Abraham Lincoln

"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal"

About this Quote

Lincoln opens by yoking the Civil War to a sacred origin story, but he does it with a historian’s chill and a preacher’s cadence. “Fourscore and seven” sounds Biblical on purpose: it drags the listener out of political squabbling and into the long moral clock of a nation. The phrasing slows time, elevates the moment, and quietly implies judgment. If you can hear Scripture in it, you can also hear indictment.

The intent is less commemoration than repositioning. Lincoln doesn’t ground the United States in the Constitution’s compromises; he grounds it in the Declaration’s claim that “all men are created equal.” That choice is the subtextual knife. By invoking “conceived” and “brought forth,” he frames the country as a living body born in liberty, implying that the war is not merely about territory or power but about whether that body can survive without betraying its DNA. Equality becomes not a slogan but a test of legitimacy: if the Union fails, the founding proposition looks like a lie.

Context does the rest. Delivered at Gettysburg in 1863, surrounded by fresh graves, the line does two jobs at once: it sanctifies sacrifice and narrows the argument about what those deaths mean. “Our fathers” creates a shared inheritance for divided citizens, but it also pressures the living to act like heirs rather than squatters. The brilliance is its economy: a single sentence turns a battlefield into a referendum on national purpose.
