Life & Wisdom Quote by Craig Bruce

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his ability"

About this Quote

A one-word twist turns a famous egalitarian promise into a cold little machine. Marx's original slogan, "to each according to his needs", imagines distribution as a moral question: society notices hunger, illness, dependency, and answers them. Craig Bruce swaps in "ability" at the receiving end, and the whole thing curdles into a meritocratic hall of mirrors. You give because you can; you get because you can. The vulnerable don't just fall through the cracks - the cracks are the design.

Bruce, a thriller writer with an instinct for system-level cynicism, is likely aiming at the rhetoric of fairness that hides extraction. The line reads like propaganda from a sleek dystopia: efficient, symmetrical, almost soothing. That symmetry is the joke and the warning. When a society makes "ability" the sole currency, it launders privilege into virtue and turns misfortune into personal failure. Disability, childcare, aging, bad luck - all become moral stains. The slogan doesn't merely reward excellence; it punishes need.

The subtext is also about how political language gets hacked. Borrow the cadence of a revolutionary credo, keep the comforting rhythm, then smuggle in an ideology that looks like its opposite. It's a critique of a certain late-20th-century confidence: that markets, competition, and "performance" can replace solidarity without residue. Bruce's version insists there is residue, and it has a body count.

Contextually, it lands as a dark mirror held up to both extremes: a jab at socialist slogans' grand simplicity, and a sharper jab at capitalist realism's tendency to call itself natural law. The line works because it sounds inevitable - and that's exactly the trap it's exposing.
