In late Roman North Africa, amid theological firefights over grace, sin, and human agency, Augustine argued against the comforting idea that moral improvement is mostly self-powered. If God’s love is this personal, then grace is not a general weather system but an intervention. You can’t hide in the crowd, and you can’t take credit without remainder.

It also works because it answers a very human fear: that we are replaceable, that attention is a scarce resource.
