Fatherhood Quote by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola

"God the Father, the supreme Architect, had already built this cosmic home we behold, the most sacred temple of His godhead, by the laws of His mysterious wisdom"

About this Quote

Pico frames creation as architecture, and that metaphor is doing more than supplying Renaissance poetry. Calling God the “supreme Architect” turns the universe into a designed structure you can study, measure, and admire - a cosmic building whose proportions imply intelligence. It’s a strategic compromise: he preserves orthodox awe (“most sacred temple of His godhead”) while licensing a new appetite for inquiry. If the world is a temple, then attention to its geometry isn’t profane curiosity; it’s a form of reverence.

The subtext is Humanist confidence under theological supervision. Pico is writing in a late-15th-century moment when scholars are raiding Greek, Roman, Hermetic, and Kabbalistic texts for a grand synthesis. That project risks looking like arrogance or heresy. So he wraps the boldness in piety: God’s wisdom is “mysterious,” the laws are His, the temple is His. The rhetoric functions like a passport stamp for intellectual ambition.

“Laws” is the quiet detonator. It suggests a cosmos that runs according to intelligible principles - not a chaotic stage for arbitrary miracles, but an ordered system. That’s the mental weather that makes Renaissance natural philosophy possible, and later, modern science: if creation has structure, then the mind can trace it. Pico’s genius is to make that claim without sounding like he’s replacing God with mathematics. He’s arguing for a world where reason has a devout job description.
