"Great people talk about ideas, average people talk about things, and small people talk about wine"
About this Quote
The intent is double. On the surface, it’s a snob’s sorting mechanism: who’s worth your attention gets measured by what they’re willing to talk about. But the “wine” twist exposes the arbitrariness of those measurements. Wine is culture-coded as sophistication, the thing people perform when they want to look worldly without saying anything. By calling it “small,” Lebowitz mocks that performance and the people who use taste as a substitute for thought. It’s not anti-wine; it’s anti-conversation-as-consumerism.
Subtext: talk is a moral act. “Things” suggests gossip, logistics, brand talk, the inventory of modern life. “Ideas” suggests risk: abstraction, disagreement, the willingness to be wrong in public. “Wine” suggests retreat into curated preference, where the stakes are safely low and the vocabulary is borrowed. The joke flatters the listener into aspiring upward, then implicates them: how often are we just narrating our purchases with a personality attached?
Context matters because Lebowitz built a career out of skewering American pretension from inside its most pretentious rooms. It’s social criticism you can repeat at a dinner party, which is exactly the point: it polices the party while entertaining it.
