Life, for Sallust, is less a gift than a ledger. You exist in any meaningful sense only when you can point to a difficult undertaking and the disciplined competence it demanded. The line is austere on purpose: it narrows the definition of living until pleasure, status, even mere survival look like evasions. What remains is work that is "serious" (morally weighty, publicly consequential) and credit that is earned, not granted.

The subtext is Roman and Republican: virtue is proven in action, and action is measured by the standard of the community. Sallust isn’t praising hustle; he’s policing legitimacy. "Proper use of life" carries an almost legal chill, as if time were public property you’re obligated to justify. Even the desire for "credit" reads less like vanity than like accountability. To seek credit for a task "well and skillfully performed" is to insist that reputation should track merit - a pointed claim in a political culture rotting on patronage, spectacle, and inherited prestige.

Context sharpens the edge. Sallust wrote after the Republic’s convulsions - civil wars, collapsing norms, ambitious men using the state as a stage. His histories, especially on Catiline and Jugurtha, are diagnoses of moral decline: greed, luxury, and private appetites hollowing out public life. This sentence functions as both self-justification (the historian as serious worker, trading battlefield glory for civic memory) and indictment. If Rome is failing, it’s because too many are busy living, and too few are busy deserving to be remembered.
