"Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration"
About this Quote
The trick is in the comparison. Victorian Britain was thick with stage mesmerists, spiritualism, and parlor séances; Dickens knew the cultural appetite for conjuration and also its fraudulence. By ranking "home" above those performances, he isn't endorsing the occult so much as exposing what actually enchants people: the promise of refuge in an era that offered little. Industrial cities were swelling, work was brutal, poverty was public, and family could be as precarious as employment. Against that churn, "home" becomes the most persuasive fiction society tells itself - a private sanctuary, a moral center, a stable identity.
There's subtext, too, in how "home" is framed as a verbal talisman. If it's a word, it can be bestowed, denied, or weaponized. Dickens spent his career dramatizing that imbalance: children without safe homes, men whose respectability depends on having one, women confined by the ideal. The line flatters the sentiment while quietly admitting its artifice. The strongest conjuration isn't supernatural; it's social.
