Life & Wisdom Quote by Muriel Rukeyser

"However confused the scene of our life appears, however torn we may be, who now do face that scene, it can be faced, and we can go on to be whole"

About this Quote

Rukeyser doesn’t soothe; she steadies. The sentence starts in the middle of a storm: “However confused... however torn...” The repetition works like a handrail. It grants full legitimacy to disorientation and fracture, then refuses to let those states have the last word. That’s the poem’s quiet trick: it doesn’t argue that life is coherent, it argues that incoherence is survivable.

“Scene” is a telling choice. Life isn’t framed as an essence to be discovered but as something staged, crowded, messy, and partly outside our control. You can’t rewrite the set in real time, but you can face it. The verb “face” lands with muscular simplicity: not solve, not transcend, not “heal” in the Instagram sense. Just meet reality without flinching. Then she doubles down: “it can be faced.” The passive construction is almost democratic; the capacity isn’t reserved for saints or geniuses. It’s available.

The subtext is political as much as personal. Rukeyser wrote through the Great Depression, World War II, McCarthy-era suspicion, and the long aftermath of those shocks. Her work often insists that private pain and public crisis are braided together, and that wholeness isn’t purity; it’s integration. “Whole” arrives not as a return to a pre-broken self, but as a future tense achievement: a self assembled from what happened, not untouched by it. The line offers a hard-won permission: you can be torn and still keep moving, and moving can be the method by which you become whole.
