"However I am is however I am. When you see me onstage or in the press, there's not a lot of thought and calculation that goes into it"
About this Quote
The second sentence is the more interesting tell. Crow isn’t denying that performance exists; she’s denying the kind of performance audiences have been trained to suspect: PR chess, image engineering, the icy calculation of celebrity. That’s a strategic move in itself, especially for a musician who broke through in the 90s when “authenticity” became a market category. Rock culture rewarded women for seeming effortless while punishing them for appearing ambitious. Saying she doesn’t “calculate” plays into that old double bind - and also sidesteps it. You can’t accuse her of being fake if she refuses the premise that there’s an alternate, truer Crow off-camera.
Context matters: this is post-MTV, post-tabloid machine, and now, even more pointedly, prefigures the social-media expectation that everyone narrate their brand identity. Crow’s intent is to reclaim a kind of ordinary humanity - not as innocence, but as refusal.
