Technically, Stroustrup is pointing at Java’s design tradeoffs - managed runtime, constrained low-level control, a particular object model, performance predictability that depends on the JVM - and implying that those tradeoffs are reasonable in some contexts and punishing in others. The subtext comes from who’s speaking. As the creator of C++, Stroustrup spent decades arguing for “multi-paradigm” pragmatism: choose tools that fit constraints, not aesthetics or vendor promises. The phrase “promoted as the sole” is the tell; he’s blaming the ecosystem’s evangelism and management incentives as much as Java’s syntax or runtime. It’s a warning about monoculture: when an organization commits to a single language, it stops noticing that it’s paying hidden costs - workarounds, performance cliffs, awkward integrations - just to keep the standardization story intact.
