The subtext is accountability with a familiar rock-and-roll edge. “Rebellion” and “stubborn” are self-mythologizing words in a musician’s vocabulary; they evoke the romance of resistance while quietly deflating it. He’s admitting that the posture that can look like authenticity onstage can also be a spiritual dodge offstage.
