"I always enjoyed going into the holodeck"
About this Quote
Context does a lot of the heavy lifting. TNG’s holodeck episodes let the show pivot from starship procedural to noir pastiche, swashbuckler fantasy, or romantic comedy without leaving the Enterprise. For a performer, that’s a weekly permission slip to change genres, costumes, rhythms, even bodies. Frakes’ Riker could go from stiff Starfleet decorum to loose-limbed charm, and the audience got to watch the franchise admit a truth it usually hides: the future is fun when it’s allowed to be fake.
The line also carries a faint, knowing irony. The holodeck is where characters escape duty, rehearse versions of themselves, and occasionally unleash disaster. Saying he “enjoyed” it hints at the same tension that made those episodes work: the most controlled environment on the ship is where control collapses, where desire and narrative chaos slip their leash. For Frakes, it’s entertainment. For the series, it’s a pressure valve - and a sly comment on television itself as a holodeck we willingly step into.
