Riefenstahl’s genius was never in dialogue or character psychology; it was in the camera’s ability to sanctify. In Triumph of the Will and Olympia, she doesn’t simply record bodies and crowds, she choreographs them into destiny. So when she says she’s “fascinated” by the “beautiful” and the “strong,” she’s naming an artistic preference that also functions as an alibi: an artist’s statement that tries to float above politics. “I seek harmony” sounds like neutrality, even peace.

But in the 20th century, “harmony” is rarely innocent. In fascist aesthetics, harmony often means order without dissent, unity without difference, a world scrubbed of the inconvenient. Health becomes a moral category; strength becomes proof of worthiness; “living” quietly implies that some lives are more fully alive than others. The quote’s rhetoric works because it borrows the uplifting vocabulary of art and wellness and drains it of friction, making ideology feel like taste.

Context matters: Riefenstahl spent decades insisting she was apolitical, merely devoted to beauty. This line is part of that long self-defense. It’s also a reminder of cinema’s seduction: the camera can make power look natural, even benevolent, if you frame it as “harmony.”
