"I am just the classic person who wants to learn stuff. I want good tutors, and with Kurt I had the best"
About this Quote
The word “tutors” is doing heavy cultural work. Rock mythology pretends no one is taught; you’re either born with it or you’re not. Love punctures that myth and makes art feel like craft, like study, like a set of skills passed hand to hand. It’s also a subtle flex. Wanting “good” tutors implies taste, standards, a seriousness about the work that critics have often denied her.
Then she names Kurt. The sentence swerves from generic curiosity to a very specific, loaded relationship. In Nirvana’s wake, Cobain is often treated as the sacred text and Love as the footnote. “With Kurt I had the best” flips that hierarchy without attacking it: she honors him while asserting proximity to his creative process, his thinking, his methods. The subtext isn’t dependency; it’s access. In a culture that loves to cast women around male geniuses as muses or liabilities, Love claims the role of collaborator-as-learner, and insists learning is its own kind of power.
